Never been fitted before? Knowing what to expect at a golf club fitting takes the nerves out of it. A fitting is a one-on-one session where a fitter uses a launch monitor to find the clubs that suit your swing. Here’s how it works from booking to buying. If you’re in Brisbane, you can book a club fitting at Golf Central with a PGA professional and a GCQuad launch monitor.
The Short Version
A golf club fitting takes 30 minutes to four hours depending on how much of your bag you fit. You hit your current clubs first. Then you test different heads, shafts and grips while a launch monitor records every shot. You leave with a spec sheet and no obligation to buy.
What to Expect at a Golf Club Fitting, Step by Step
1. Book the Right Type of Fitting
Fittings range from a single club to a full bag. A single club takes about an hour. A full bag can take up to four hours. If you’re new to fittings, a driver session is an easy starting point.

2. Prepare Before You Arrive
Bring the clubs you play now. Your fitter needs them as a baseline. Pack your glove and wear your usual golf shoes. Bring a sleeve of your regular balls too.
Arrive about 10 minutes early so you can stretch and warm up. Skip a big range session the day before. You’ll hit plenty of full swings during the fitting.
3. Meet Your Fitter
Your fitter starts with a chat. They’ll ask about your game, your goals and where your bad shots go. Be honest. A slice, a hook or a lack of distance each point to different fixes.
Tell them your budget as well. It helps them show you options that make sense.
4. Hit Your Current Clubs for a Baseline
Next you hit your own clubs. The launch monitor records the numbers. This creates a benchmark, so every new option gets compared with what you already play.
At Golf Central, fittings use a Foresight GCQuad. It tracks ball speed, smash factor, launch angle, spin rate, club path, face angle and where you strike the face.
5. Test Different Heads, Shafts and Grips
Now the fun part. You hit different clubheads and shafts while the data updates after every shot. Shaft flex, weight and length all change how a club performs.
Fitters also test grip size and material. Small changes here often make a big difference to feel.
6. Fine-Tune Length, Lie and Loft
Once you find a strong combination, your fitter dials it in. They adjust the length, lie angle and loft until the numbers and the feel line up. This is where a good fit becomes a great one.
7. Review the Results and Decide
You finish with your numbers and a spec sheet of recommended clubs, shafts and grips. You can also compare your “before” and “after” data.
There’s no pressure to buy on the day. Some fitters credit the fitting fee when you purchase clubs. At Golf Central the full fee comes off the price, so the fitting is effectively free if you buy.
Why Data Matters in Your Fitting
A good fitter relies on data and not brand loyalty. That means you’re matched to what works for your swing, whatever the logo on the bag.
Golf Central’s fitter, PGA Professional Alan Staines, has more than 20 years of experience. His process is built around your numbers. Clubs from brands like Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade and Ping can all be tested.
